Oh great now we have one that plays both... I think you should just chose one or the other. Since you like classical I would go with clarinet. We don't need another sax in the world!!! (I am talking about saxes who play classical! Jazz saxes are fine with me ;D)
I went to honor band for the first rehearsal. I am not impressed. The music sucks my arse!!! The people I am playing with are good enough so I am mildly pleased.
*bites finger nails* Uhoh... Auditioning for chairs this Saturday... Not good....

Auditions on a Saturday!?! What is the world coming to?
Anywho, I was thinking about picking up clarinet again but not for a while. And there is nothing wrong with classical sax, I love it. I play alto for Wind Ensemble.
Flipp.....I'll look out for em.
And Our band took 3rd at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival this week. w00t! We rocked out.

Sounds like fun. We have a couple of concerts coming up soon. Our jazz show is going to be awesome. And then we have a cruise over spring break where we will play some.
Also, I'm going to get some starting supplies for woodwind(sax) repair and start working on that on the side. That may be what I will devote my summer to.

I play both. I'm in the pit orchestra for my school, so even though I usually play the sax, I also have to play a broken clarinet. I prefer to play classical music (although the good parts are given to the flutes and trumpets). I like jazz as well, but I don't like the way the music is written, it's too hard to read. and as far as listening to classical music: I'd much rather play than listen, but I've been to a few symphonies. VH1 save the music, man! Like I said I started on clarinet but sucked at it. I agree that a lot of the good parts go to trumpets and flutes, but alto sax gets a good amount. What sax do you play? Sorry for my ignorance, but what is it about jazz music that is hard to read? I know that the rythms tend to be difficult, but it is really fun. wonder what this is for? and this... [shadow=blue,left,300]shadow?[/shadow] [glow=pink,2,300]weird text stuff![/glow]

I play the alto sax, although I wouldn't mind going to a tenor or a barry, but NOT a soprano (unless Kenny G suddenly died...). And it's not really the rhythms that are hard to read, it the actual music itself. I mean, most of the classical music is 'typed' from a comp., but the Jazz is rather recent, and so it is handwritten. And some people write MESSY music, and I can't tell what note it is. grrrrr, it makes me angry thinking about it.

Some of the charts may be hand written, but they often use a different font that looks like hand written stuff.....I agree that some charts are almost unreadable. I'm definately getting a bari over the summer, and there is nothing wrong with soprano(except Kenny G). ;D But tenor and bari require a lot more air to play. Also, make sure it is in very good playing condition, or it will be very hard to learn to play them.

BACK!!! BOY AM I PLEASED!!! I am now 7th chair in the wind ensemble I play in. (that is 7th out of 14 and I was last chair a few months ago ) Now I am playing second clarinet instead of 3rd! It looks like my hard work has finally payed off.

Congrats on the placement!
On clarinet I was usually in the last five seats.
On sax, I maintain first(Classical) or second(jazz).

Now I understand why you changed to sax... But last 5 chairs isn't so bad!!! I have been a serious clarinet player for a year and last 3 has been what I have been getting till now!
I need to learn to jazz clarinet. My band director is a jazz musician. Maybe I should talk to him about it... (the things I realize while typing on message boards. Crikey...)

Well, I took some time off(Spring break and all).....and I now own a textbook A Guide to Repairing Woodwinds. I have been reading it quite a bit, but I have to wait until I get a horn to practice working on. By the end of next month I hope to have a vintage Conn 10M Tenor!!! I need to start looking for a pro level alto as well, and that's probably going to be about $2k......bummer.

Adding replies that might not get read....
Got the 10M tenor last month, and it rocks! Turned 20 on July 1st, and got a clarinet as a gift. It needs some work, but I am expecting a clarinet repair kit in the next few days.

I'm bored so I'm going to post here. Like it will be read. I just got back from "Fine Arts Camp" a few weeks ago. I was obviously enrolled in the music program there. I wasn't last chair either! ;D It looks like my days of playing 3rd clarinet are over. My teacher finally decided I should start learning some flashy music. I guess my good tone wasn't enough to get me a higher chair. I am currently trying to survive Marching Band Camp. We have a new director who is a great clarinet player. This guy has the highest standards of any highschool band director that I have met. I am hoping that I am going to be first chair clarinet as a freshman. ;D I have heard a lot of the Seniors and Juniors and I sound at least as good as they do. Let's just hope my nerves hold out during my audition...

Good to hear you're doing well. Clarinet has been my main learning experience in the last few weeks. I've been repairing and playing it constantly. Need to order some more pads though. I start classes on Monday, bummer. And my 10M is in the shop getting some much needed work.
That's all my music news for now....stay tuned!
